If you are picking up and delivering goods within the state of Texas, you will most likely need to acquire a TxDOT Number.
What is a Texas DOT Number?
A Texas DOT (aka a TxDOT/TxDMV) Number is a unique identification number issued by the Texas Department of Transportation to motor carriers operating in Texas. It is used to regulate and monitor commercial motor vehicle operations within Texas. If your company has registered a vehicle as an intrastate motor carrier within Texas, it must obtain a TxDOT Number to operate legally.
Who Is Required to Register For a TxDOT / TxDMV Number?
According to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, you must register as a motor carrier and obtain a TxDOT when you meet any of the following criteria:
- Operate a commercial motor vehicle or combination of vehicles with a GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) exceeding 26,000 pounds
- Transport household goods for compensation, regardless of vehicle weight
- Transport hazardous materials in a quantity that requires placarding
- Operate a vehicle designed to transport more than 15 passengers, including the driver
- Operate a farm vehicle with a gross weight, registered weight, or gross weight rating of 48,000 pounds or more
- Operate a commercial school bus
Do I Need a TxDOT Number if I Already Have a USDOT Number?
Yes, you may still need a TxDOT number even if you have a USDOT number, depending on your specific operations in Texas. If your operations are intrastate in Texas (even if you have a USDOT number for other states), you still need a TxDOT number.
When Do I Need to Renew my TxDOT Number?
There are a few different periods available for TxDOT Numbers. They are available for 7 days, 90 days, 1 year, or 2 years. Renewal notices are sent to the current mailing address or the email on file. These notices are sent out approximately 30 days before the TxDOT’s expiration. A TxDOT Number registered for only 7 or 90 days is unavailable to renew.
Insurance Requirements
To be applicable to obtain a TxDOT, you must have the minimum insurance coverage required for your vehicle or vehicles. Texas requires that you register and file proof of insurance to the state before beginning operations. Failure to do so may result in fines, penalties, or administrative sanctions filed against you. If your insurance company drops you or you cancel your policy, you have a 30-day grace period to obtain and submit your new proof of insurance.
You must also submit the name of the company and facility that conducts drug testing for your organization. This is to prove that they comply with necessary drug testing standards.
