Is Getting A DOT Number Free?
If you operate a commercial motor vehicle in the United States, chances are you’ll need a DOT Number.
Yes, the DOT number filing is free but there might be other regulations you have to pay for. It is a fundamental requirement for any transportation business. A common question asked within the industry is whether obtaining a DOT Number is free. Before discussing how to obtain a DOT number, also called a USDOT number, let’s briefly define it.
What Is a DOT Number?
A USDOT number is an identification number that can be used to monitor safety and compliance. If a company is transporting people or cargo from one state to another, that company will require a USDOT number and must register with the FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration). Companies that transport hazardous materials intrastate must also obtain a USDOT number.
Are DOT Numbers Free?
Yes, DOT numbers are free. Anyone can get a USDOT Number directly from the FMCSA for free. Unfortunately, some companies try to take advantage of people who are unaware of this. They may claim that they can personally sell them a DOT number, which is never the case. If anyone tries to sell you a DOT Number or tells you that you need to pay for one, they are incorrect.
Even though the DOT filing is free, this does not mean all Federal or State regulations are also free. Depending on how you plan to operate your business, you may need other registrations, such as a Motor Carrier (MC #) number for interstate commerce or drug testing if you’re operating a CDL-required vehicle. It all depends on how and where you operate your business. The FMCSA reserves the right to charge for this service in the future. As of the writing of this article, there has been no change to this policy.
How To Register
Obtaining your USDOT number is a fairly easy process. You can apply through the FMCSA’s website. Once there, you will go through their User Registration System (URS). Along with guiding you through the process, the URS also gives you information on everything you need to complete the form. This includes certain permits, registrations, or authorities possibly required depending on your situation.
The FMCSA also has free information on registration requirements. This assures you have all the documents and information you need before filing.
After completing the registration process, you will receive your USDOT number. Once acquired, always display it on your vehicle and use it for all transportation-related activities within your company.
If you have any questions or if you would like assistance, FCCR can help file your DOT Number.
