Supervisor Training Overview

Under 49 CFR Part 382.603, anyone who supervises two or more commercial drivers must complete a minimum of 2 hours of supervisor training; 60 minutes on alcohol abuse and 60 minutes on drug abuse.

If you’ve started your own trucking company and supervise two or more drivers, you may be required to certify that you’ve provided a drug and alcohol abuse training. FCCR offers a training course that’s completely online and fulfills the requirements set by the FMCSA.

What Are the Supervisor Training Requirements?

Trucking companies with two or more drivers are required to have a supervisor that has taken a course on recognizing indicators that create a reasonable suspicion that a driver is under the influence of alcohol or drugs. It should also outline the process on how to refer that employee for testing. The FMCSA requires that the training includes:

  • 60 minutes of training on the symptoms of alcohol abuse
  • 60 minutes of training on the symptoms of controlled substances use
