Product Description
A USDOT Number is a unique identifier issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) for anyone operating a commercial motor vehicle for profit. It’s required to legally transport property or passengers in the U.S. and is used to track your company’s safety and compliance record.
A commercial motor vehicle (CMV) is generally defined as one that:
• Has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 10,001 pounds or more
• Is part of a combination vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more
• Is designed or used to transport more than 8 passengers (including the driver) for pay, or more than 15 passengers if unpaid
• Transports hazardous materials requiring federal placards
No. You can obtain a USDOT Number as an individual operating under your own name or a DBA (Doing Business As). You can also choose to create a business entity such as an LLC or corporation, depending on how you want to structure your operation.
To file for your USDOT Number, have the following details ready:
• Employer Identification Number (EIN) or Social Security Number
• Legal name or company name
• Principal business address
• Company phone number and email address
When registering, you’ll need to identify how your business operates. Options include:
• Authorized For-Hire
• Exempt For-Hire
• Private (Property)
• Private Passenger (Business or Non-Business)
• Federal, State, Local Government, or Tribal Entity
After filing, your company will undergo a new entrant safety audit conducted by the FMCSA. This review ensures your business meets all compliance and safety requirements. You’ll also need to:
• Maintain a valid medical examiner’s certificate
• Ensure your commercial vehicle passes a DOT safety inspection
• Keep proof of insurance on file
• Maintain a compliant Driver Qualification (DQ) File
A USDOT Number is required to legally operate commercial vehicles, but it’s not the only compliance step. You’ll also need a Driver Qualification File, proof of insurance, and safety documentation.
If you plan to operate across state lines, you’ll also need to apply for Motor Carrier Authority (MC#) to gain interstate operating authority.
