What is the New Mexico Weight and Distance Permit?

New Mexico imposes a weight-distance tax on owners and operators of commercial vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating over 26,000 pounds. This tax is based on vehicle weight and miles traveled on New Mexico roads. A vehicle titled in New Mexico that is subject to the weight-distance tax and traveling intrastate is issued a weight-distance plate.

Who is Required to File a New Mexico Weight and Distance Permit?

All commercial motor vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating over 26,000 pounds that travel through New Mexico must file for this permit.

How Often Does the New Mexico Weight and Distance Permit Need to be Filed?

Companies must register and apply annually for a New Mexico Weight Distance Tax Electronic Permit for each vehicle. The tax returns must be filed by:

• April 30 (for the quarter January 1 through March 31)
• July 31 (for the quarter April 1 through June 30)
• October 31 (for the quarter July 1 through September 30)
• January 31 (for the period October 1 through December 31)

These permits are valid through December 31st of the year of their issuing.

When Does the New Mexico Weight and Distance Permit Need to be Renewed?

The New Mexico Weight and Distance Permit must be renewed annually by December 31st.
