The 2026 CVSA International Roadcheck is scheduled for May 12 through May 14. During this 72-hour enforcement period, commercial motor vehicle drivers across the United States, Canada, and Mexico should expect increased inspections at weigh stations and roadside checkpoints.
This annual event is the largest targeted enforcement program for commercial vehicles in the world. On average, nearly 15 trucks and motorcoaches are inspected every minute across North America.
What Is the CVSA International Roadcheck?
The CVSA Roadcheck is a three-day inspection and enforcement initiative focused on improving commercial vehicle safety and compliance.
It is organized by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) with support from agencies like the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), Transport Canada, and Mexico’s transportation authorities.
Since it began in 1988, more than 1.8 million inspections have been conducted during this event. It also serves as an opportunity to educate drivers and carriers on safety regulations and best practices.
What to Expect During the 2026 Roadcheck
During the Roadcheck, inspectors will follow the North American Standard Inspection Procedures and Out-of-Service Criteria. Most inspections will be Level I inspections, which include a full review of both the driver and the vehicle.
If violations are found, drivers or vehicles may be placed out of service until the issue is corrected.
Driver Inspection Requirements
Inspectors will review key driver qualifications and compliance records, including:
- Commercial driver’s license (CDL)
- Record of duty status (RODS)
- Medical examiner’s certificate
- Seat belt usage
- Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse status
- Skill performance certificates, if applicable
They will also check for signs of drug or alcohol impairment. Drivers placed out of service are not allowed to continue operating until the violation is resolved.
Vehicle Inspection Requirements
Vehicle inspections focus on mechanical condition and overall safety. Inspectors will check:
- Brake systems

- Steering and suspension
- Tires, wheels, and rims
- Lights and electrical systems
- Fuel and exhaust systems

ELD Tampering and Hours-of-Service Violations

Some errors come from misunderstanding the rules. However, others are intentional and used to hide hours-of-service violations or unreported driving time.
In 2025, falsification of records of duty status was one of the most common violations, with over 58,000 cases reported.
Cargo Securement Requirements
Cargo securement is the main vehicle focus for the 2026 Roadcheck. Improperly secured loads can create serious safety hazards, including falling debris or loss of vehicle control.
Drivers should make sure cargo is properly secured so it cannot:
- Leak, spill, or fall from the vehicle
- Shift and affect stability or maneuverability
- Become dislodged during transport
Flatbed loads should be positioned against a front-end structure or secured with proper tie-downs to prevent forward movement.
All equipment must also be secured, including:
- Tarps and chains
- Spare tires
- Pallet jacks and forklifts
- Dunnage and loose materials
Tie-downs should be inspected regularly for wear or damage to ensure they meet current safety standards.
What Happens If You Pass Inspection?
Vehicles that pass a Level I or Level V inspection without critical violations may receive a CVSA decal. This decal is valid for up to three months and shows that the vehicle recently passed inspection.
