CVSA International Roadcheck Puts Drivers Out Of Service

An event organized by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance has left thousands of drivers and vehicles out of service.

Commercial vehicle enforcement personnel across the US, Canada, and Mexico conducted this year’s International Roadcheck in May. The three-day operation, lasting from the 14th through the 16th, oversaw 48,761 roadside inspections.

This resulted in 9,345 commercial vehicle combinations and 2,290 drivers being put out of service across the three countries.

Vehicle Roadcheck Results

In the US, 42,332 inspections were carried out by CVSA-certified inspectors. Each year, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance focuses on a specific category for both vehicle and driver violations. This year’s category for vehicles was TPS (tractor protection systems). Tractor protection systems secure the tractor’s air supply by preventing air loss when it’s either disconnected from a trailer or if the trailer becomes detached.

This year, there were a total of 11,675 vehicle violations with 564 of them being TPS-related. The most common citation was related to defective breaks, while second place went to issues with tires.

There were also 140 hazmat violations, with the number one cause being improper loading.

This resulted in 7,930 (23.2% of all) vehicle combinations put out of service in America.

Driver Results

The main category of focus in this year’s roadcheck for drivers was alcohol and controlled substance possession.

Driver violations came out to a total of 2,619 in America, with 2,151 being put out of service (5.1% of commercial drivers). This includes 78 drug and 26 alcohol citations. Out of these drivers, 63 of them were put out of service for operating vehicles illegally. This is due to them having a prior drug or alcohol-related charge that put them in the FMCSA’s “Drug and Alcohol Clearhousing”, a government database that shows who is currently not allowed to operate a commercial vehicle. This occurs when a driver has not fulfilled their required evaluation and treatments before receiving drug or alcohol citations.

The number one citation for drivers was related to their hours of service, while the second was due to driving without a CDL.
