Oregon Weight and Distance Permit: What You Need to Know
If you are driving a commercial vehicle through Oregon, you will most likely need to obtain an Oregon weight and distance permit.
How to Obtain the Permit
If you plan to haul freight through Oregon, you’ll have to abide by their state’s rules regarding cargo vehicles. Oregon requires commercial carriers with a gross vehicle weight of 26,000 pounds to register for a weight and distance permit. This is needed even if you’re not based in the state.
The permit is issued through your VIN and must be printed and kept in the vehicle’s cab at all times. Carriers are also required to put a $2,000 surety bond from their insurance company to the state of Oregon. Additional trucks on this permit increase the bond by $375 for each vehicle.
Permits are typically issued 3-5 weeks after filing for them.
If you do not plan on frequently hauling freight through Oregon, you can apply for a temporary Weight and Distance Permit. You’ll need to validate payment of the weight-mile tax upfront. The permit costs $9 plus the weight-mile tax for each mile driven in the state and is valid for 10 days. If needed longer, you can renew it once in 12 months.
Maintaining Your Permit
There are a handful of things required of you to keep your permit active. Report the miles that you travel through Oregon every month. This is necessary even if it was zero miles for the month. Miles are reported per truck, not per fleet.
Failure to file reports may result in the suspension of your account.
Additionally, your permit will auto-renew every year if you don’t miss a month of filing and your surety bond is paid. You can request to file quarterly after 12 months of filing instead of monthly. If approved, this will also remove your surety bond.
