Who Has to Pay a Highway Use Tax?

All commercial motor vehicles that travel on New York State Highways and have a GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) of more than 18,000 lbs. are required to pay the Highway Use Tax.

When is a Highway Use Tax Due?

You must file a HUT return and pay tax due on a quarterly basis, starting with the calendar quarter when you began operations in New York State.

How is the Highway Use Tax Calculated?

The tax is based on the miles traveled on New York State public highways and the weight of the vehicle.

When Do New York HUT Stickers Need to be Renewed?

At present, New York HUT stickers are valid for a three-year period from the date they are issued. This means that stickers issued in 2024 would not need to be renewed until 2027.
