According to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, you must register as a motor carrier and obtain a TxDOT Number when you meet any of the following criteria:
• A commercial motor vehicle or combination with a GVWR over 26,000 lbs.
• A vehicle transporting household goods for compensation.
• A vehicle carrying hazardous materials requiring placards.
• A vehicle designed to transport more than 15 passengers, including the driver.
• A farm vehicle with a gross or registered weight of 48,000 lbs. or more.
• A commercial school bus.
Yes. Even if you have a USDOT number, you still need a TxDOT number if you operate intrastate within Texas. The TxDOT number applies to carriers whose business is limited to Texas operations, while the USDOT number covers interstate activities.
