Three ELDs revoked by FMCSA
Truckers have 60 days to replace their ELD or face the consequences of receiving a citation and being removed from service.
On November 18th, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) officially removed 3 specific ELDs from their list of approved devices.
The devices in question are the following:
- Keep Tracking
- Rollingtrans ELD – ACCURATE ONE
- RT ELD Plus – ACCURATE PLUS
The FMCSA cited the reasoning for this as “due to the companies’ failure to meet the minimum requirements established in 49 CFR part 395, subpart B, appendix A.”
The FMSCA specified no further information as to what the failed requirements were.
Brief Overview of ELD
An ELD is an electronic logging device used by drivers of commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) to record driving time and Hours of Service (HOS) records automatically and capture data on the vehicle’s engine movement and miles driven. A mandate to make ELDs mandatory was enacted on December 18th, 2017.
The mandate requires drivers to log their Record of Duty Status (RoDS) using an electronic logging device (ELD). These devices offer a standardized format for roadside inspections. Additionally, they use advanced location tracking and allow drivers to approve or decline edits to their driving logs.
Timeline and Consequences
According to the FMCSA website, “Motor carriers have up to 60 days to replace the revoked ELDs with compliant ELDs. If the ELD providers correct all identified device deficiencies, FMCSA will place the ELDs back on the list of registered devices and inform the industry of the update.”
During this period, the FMCSA is encouraging safety officials not to cite drivers for using these revoked ELDs. Instead, they are asking them to request the drivers’ paper logs or logging software.
However, drivers caught using these ELDs will be held accountable starting January 7th, 2025. If they are found using one of the removed ELDs, they will be cited and removed from service.
