What is a USDOT Number?
A USDOT number is a unique identification number issued by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). It helps monitor safety and ensure companies follow transportation regulations.
Businesses transporting people or goods across state lines must register for a DOT number with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Companies that carry hazardous materials within a single state also need a DOT number.
Who Needs a USDOT Number?
Federal law requires all commercial motor carriers and their drivers to follow all DOT regulations. These rules help protect passengers, property, and road safety. To comply, businesses must display their USDOT number on both sides of their vehicle in a visible, contrasting color. Failure to do so could result in fines or penalties for both the driver and the company.
A USDOT number is required for companies operating across state lines if they meet any of the following conditions:
- The vehicle has a gross weight (including truck, trailer, and cargo) of more than 10,000 pounds.
- The company transports hazardous materials.
- The company moves between 9 and 15 passengers (including the driver) for compensation.
Businesses need a USDOT number if they:
- Transport people or goods across state lines.
- Move people or cargo within a single state but are part of a larger interstate shipment.
- Transport goods or passengers from a state to another country.
Even though USDOT numbers are required by federal law, some states also mandate DOT numbers for businesses operating only within their borders. Check if your state has this requirement.
How Do I Get a DOT Number?
To obtain a USDOT number you must apply through the FMCSA. The application process starts with determining your eligibility by using the FMCSA’s online registration system. You’ll need to provide details about your business, such as company operations, vehicle types, and cargo classification. There is no fee for obtaining a USDOT number. However, depending on your operation type, you may also need additional registrations, such as a Motor Carrier (MC) number. Once you receive your USDOT number, it must be displayed on all commercial vehicles per federal regulations, and you must comply with safety audits and reporting requirements to maintain compliance.
How Long Does It Take to Get a USDOT Number?
Applying for a USDOT number is a quick process. If done correctly, businesses can usually receive authorization within two business days.
What Rules Apply to a USDOT Number?
Having a USDOT number means following certain rules to stay compliant. Many new trucking business owners assume that once they get a DOT number, they can start working immediately. However, experienced operators know that careful planning, organization, and compliance with regulations are key to long-term success.
What Else is Needed for Compliance?
Depending on the type of operation, additional requirements may apply. If you cross state lines, you will need:
- MC Number (Motor Carrier Number)
- UCR (Unified Carrier Registration)
- Driver Qualification File
- BOC-3 (Designation of Process Agents)
For those operating commercial driver’s license (CDL) vehicles across state lines, additional requirements include:
- IFTA/IRP (International Fuel Tax Agreement & International Registration Plan)
- Drug & Alcohol Testing
- Enrollment in the FMCSA Clearinghouse
Some states also require specific registrations, such as Highway Use Taxes, for vehicles operating within their borders.
Managing compliance can be overwhelming, and many business owners prefer professional assistance. Compliance specialists can help determine which registrations are needed, complete applications, and provide ongoing support.
FCCR is a registered Process Agent with the FMCSA and can assist with getting your DOT Number.
