House Reintroduces Bill to Secure Bathroom Access for Truckers

In a groundbreaking move, a bipartisan bill was reintroduced in the House of Representatives, aiming to address a critical issue faced by truckers across the United States.

Congressman Troy E. Nehls (R-Texas-22) and Congresswoman Chrissy Houlahan (D-Pennsylvania-06) spearheaded the Trucker Restroom Accessibility Act, which seeks to ensure that truckers have convenient access to bathroom facilities during their journeys and while picking up or delivering freight.

The Trucker Restroom Accessibility Act, previously introduced last December during the final days of the previous congressional session, unfortunately failed to gain traction. However, with its reintroduction, the legislators are determined to push for its passage this time around.

Addressing a Critical Issue Post Pandemic

This legislation, if enacted, would not impose an obligation on businesses to construct new restrooms. Instead, it would mandate that truckers be granted access to existing bathroom facilities in establishments where such amenities are provided to customers or employees. By offering equal restroom access to truckers, this bill aims to address a prevalent issue that has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Congressman Nehls expressed his pride in reintroducing the legislation, highlighting the vital role played by truckers in keeping the country’s wheels turning. He emphasized that the pandemic has resulted in the closure of facilities nationwide, leaving essential employees like truckers without restroom access at work. Recognizing truckers as the backbone of the nation, Nehls stressed the importance of supporting them and acknowledging their tireless contributions.

Congresswoman Houlahan echoed Nehls’ sentiments, emphasizing the economic reliance on truck drivers and the challenges they face in recruitment and retention. The lack of restroom access at delivery points during their journeys poses a unique and unnecessary hurdle for these drivers. Houlahan particularly noted that this issue disproportionately affects female drivers, a demographic that has been instrumental in driving the country’s economic recovery from the pandemic. She called for equal rights for truckers, emphasizing that they deserve the same privileges as employees in any other workplace.

Industry Organizations and Leaders Rally Behind Critical Legislation

The Trucker Restroom Accessibility Act has garnered significant support from prominent organizations within the industry, including the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA), Women in Trucking (WIT), and the American Trucking Association (ATA). Todd Spencer, president and CEO of OOIDA, commended Representatives Nehls and Houlahan for their leadership in addressing this critical issue. He highlighted that despite trucks being responsible for transporting over 70% of the nation’s freight, truck drivers are often left without restroom access during their daily pickups and deliveries. Spencer expressed gratitude for the bipartisan effort behind this common-sense legislation and looked forward to working with coalition partners to see it signed into law.

Ellen Voie, founder of the Women in Trucking Association, emphasized the increasing need for restroom access as more women enter the trucking industry. She applauded the support shown by Representatives Nehls and Houlahan in advocating for this fundamental necessity, which has become more scarce in recent times.

Chris Spear, president and CEO of ATA, underscored the significance of restroom access for truck drivers. He recognized them as the backbone of the economy and critical to maintaining a robust supply chain. Spear stressed the importance of granting drivers access to restroom facilities while they wait for pickups or deliveries, which can often stretch for hours. Supporting this legislation is not just a matter of common courtesy, but a way to ensure the dignity of drivers and support the hardworking individuals who contribute to the nation’s prosperity.

With the reintroduction of the Trucker Restroom Accessibility Act, there is renewed hope for addressing a long-standing issue faced by truckers across the country. By advocating for equal restroom access, the bill aims to recognize the invaluable contributions of truck drivers while providing them with the basic rights they deserve.
