New Canadian Tariffs Placed On U.S. Goods
These Canadian tariffs directly respond to the tariffs placed by the Trump administration on Canada and target $20.8 billion of U.S. goods.
Canada has announced new tariffs on American goods to counter the U.S.’s recent tariff on steel and aluminum. Canadian tariffs aim at balancing the impact.
Last week, we reported on Canada’s response to this news. The Canadian Department of Finance stated, “Canada will not stand by as the United States imposed unwarranted and unreasonable tariffs on Canadian goods.”
Now, Canada has retaliated by implementing their own tariffs against the U.S.
Canadian Tariffs Announced in Response to Trade Dispute
Responding to the Trump administration’s global levies on steel and aluminum imports, Canada has taken action. The Canadian government has implemented a 25% tax on $20.8 billion of U.S. goods. The products targeted include steel, aluminum, and consumer items such as computers and sporting goods. Canadian tariffs will match the U.S.’s “dollar for dollar” says Canadian Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc. They went into effect at 12:01 a.m. EST on March 13th.
This comes after the Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, placed tariffs on C$30 billion on hundreds of consumer items. This was also in response to Trump’s 25% tariffs on Canadian goods. These products include alcohol, cosmetics, and peanut butter, as well as hundreds of other items.
The Canadian Foreign Minister, Melanie Joly, called the U.S. tariffs “unjustified and unjustifiable.” She plans on expressing her concerns to the U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, during the Group of Seven foreign ministers’ meeting. This meeting will be hosted by Canada in Quebec for the next three days.
Joly went on to say, “We need to fight back against this nonsense.”
