Video: FMCSA Explains How to Know if You Need Operating Authority

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) recently shared an instructional video on operating authority for motor carriers.

“Depending on the type of business you operate, what you transport, and if you receive payment for transporting property, passengers, or household goods, or arranging for the transportation of property or household goods, you may need to obtain interstate operating authority along with your USDOT number. Through this video and future resources, we aim to simplify the process for applicants and prepare them to operate safely,” the FMCSA says.

What Does This Video Cover?

This ~12 minute video covers the definition of an operating authority (OA), how that authority may impact you and what the application process looks like. It does not cover the types of operating authority that you may need. In the video, the FMCSA also states that there are more videos on the horizon covering things like authority for motor carriers, along with brokers and freight forwarders.
