The USDOT Biennial Update is a federal requirement from the FMCSA that ensures your company’s information is current. Motor carriers must file the MCS-150 Form, also known as the Motor Carrier Identification Report, every two years to keep their USDOT Number active. Even if none of your company details have changed, you are still required to submit the update.

Yes. Every trucking company and carrier must complete the USDOT Biennial Update to renew and maintain their active registration. Filing the MCS-150 form updates information tied to your USDOT Number.
A USDOT Number is required for all commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) that:
• Weigh 10,001 lbs or more (GVWR)
• Transport eight or more passengers for compensation
• Transport fifteen or more passengers not for compensation
• Carry hazardous materials under 49 CFR 385.403

Each carrier’s filing deadline depends on their USDOT Number.
If the second-to-last digit of your USDOT Number is odd, you must file your update every odd-numbered year.
If it is even, you must file every even-numbered year.

The last digit of your USDOT Number indicates the month your update is due:
• 1 – January
• 2 – February
• 3 – March
• 4 – April
• 5 – May
• 6 – June
• 7 – July
• 8 – August
• 9 – September
• 0 – October

To complete your Biennial Update, you’ll need:
• Your USDOT Number
• Your USDOT PIN Number
• Your Employer Identification Number (EIN) or Social Security Number (SSN)
• Company official contact information

If you fail to submit your MCS-150 form, your USDOT Number will be deactivated, which can interrupt your operations. The FMCSA may also impose civil penalties of up to $1,000 per day, not exceeding $10,000 total for non-compliance.
