New FMCSA Administrator Leaves Position After Only 2 Weeks

Adrienne Camire has left her newly acquired administrator position at the FMCSA after only 2 weeks.

Adrienne Camire, the latest acting administrator of the FMCSA, has exited the role after 2 weeks. This makes her the shortest-standing administrator in the history of the agency.

After the Department of Transportation initially announced her position on March 7th, she is now nowhere to be found on their website. On March 21st, she was deleted from the site’s leadership page. The press release announcing her appointment was also quietly removed.

Leaving the FMCSA Administrator Role

Details as to why Camire left remain unclear. Currently, the FMCSA’s leadership page only shows Sue Lawless and Jesse Elison as Executive Director and Chief Safety Officer, respectively.

She visited the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) Transportation Center in Baltimore three days before leaving the position. The FMCSA posted on its Facebook page that this was “to engage with students in the CDL training program, meet college officials and instructors, and gain some behind-the-wheel experience on the closed training course.”

Before joining FMCSA as acting administrator, Camire served as Chief Counsel for the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) during President Trump’s first term. She led all legal services for FHWA’s management of the federal-aid highway program. With over 20 years of experience, Camire has worked in legal, regulatory, and compliance roles across the private and academic sectors.

The previous shortest-term was held by Wiley Deck, who served for only 5 months.

The FMCSA And Its High Turnover Rate

The FMCSA seems to have a rather high turnover rate for the position of acting administrator.

According to Jack Van Steenburg, a previous executive director and chief safety officer at the agency, there were 9 different administrators during his last 2 terms. Speaking at the Heavy Duty Trucking Exchange last fall, he had the following to say to attendees:

“When they’re out the door almost as soon as they get to a point where they understand what’s going on, it’s very difficult to get things done.”

He went on to explain that it takes an administrator about a year to get orientated with the position.

No replacement has been announced at the time of writing.
