New FMCSA Administrator Replaces Camire After Brief Run

After a brief 2 weeks in the position, Adrienne Camire has been replaced by Derek Barrs as acting administrator of the FMCSA.

The FMCSA has had an eventful few weeks, as the acting administrator position is again seeing a new face.

We recently reported on how Adrienne Camire, the latest acting administrator of the FMCSA, lasted only two weeks in the position. The DOT announced her position on March 7th.

They quietly removed her from their site’s leadership page on March 21st.

Her disappearance from this role has yet to have an official explanation. She previously held a senior advisor position in the agency. However, it is unclear whether or not she will return to it.

Meet the New FMCSA Administrator

The Trump administration has appointed Derek Barrs as the head of the FMCSA following Camire’s brief stint.

Barrs is a former Florida Highway Patrol chief with more than three decades worth of work in public safety under his belt. In addition to this, he has a background with the Florida Department of Transportation. He was also a traffic and commercial vehicle safety consultant in multiple states.

In 2021, he became a member of the American Trucking Association’s Law Enforcement Advisory Board. He has also been involved with the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, where he served as president of the Associate Members group. Additionally, in 2023, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis appointed Barrs to the Flagler County School Board.

Multiple industry groups have pledged their support to Barrs following the announcement. These groups include the ATA, the Truckload Carriers Association, and the National Tank Truck Carriers.

ATA President Chris Spear had this to say in a recent statement:

“With nearly two decades of experience in law enforcement and the commercial motor vehicle industry, Derek Barrs’ career has been defined by his emphasis on making our roads safer for all motorists. Derek’s extensive public service at the Florida Department of Transportation and Florida Highway Patrol make him exceptionally well qualified to be FMCSA administrator.”
